Penny's Past

     "Dad how come you never told me I had an Uncle Gadget?" Penny asked as she helped her father with the dishes.
     "Who told you about my brother?" Her father asked as he stopped to look at his small daughter.
     "Grandpa told me about him.   " Penny answered as she contuined to dry a plate in her small slender hands.  "How come you never told me about him?"
     "Your mother doesn't really like me to talk about your Uncle.  " Her father answered slowly.
     "Why doesn't she?" Penny asked, as she slipped the dish into it's proper place in the cabinet.
     "I really don't know to tell you the truth Penny."   Her father answered.
     "Should I ask her?" Penny asked.
     "It's best not to, she didn't want you to know about him."   Her father told her as he smothed back his red hair.
     "Does Uncle Gadget look anything like you dad?" Penny asked as her green eyes looked at him in wonder.
     "To tell you the truth Penny, Gadget and I don't look anything alike.  " He answered with a smile as if a fond memory came into his mind.   "Not alike at all."
     "What's he like?" Penny asked.
     "Well, he's a bit clumsy, but he's still smart when he feels like showing it."   Her father answered smiling.   "You know what Penny?"
     "What?" Penny asked looking at her father.
     "I might just call my brother and ask him to come over.   I haven't talked to him for ten years."   Her father said with wonder.
     "Ten years?!   That's a long time!"   Penny cried.
     "Yeah it is....too long....Your mother never like my brother, though he was a nuance, and said he'd be bad influence on you."   He said half to himself and half to Penny.
     "So...where does Uncle Gadget live?"   Penny asked.
      "I don't really know, I'll just call him.....later that is."   Her father said.   "Penny I think it's time for you to go to bed." Her father smiled and kissed her gently on the forehead.  
     "Yes sir." Penny kissed her dad on the cheek and ran quickly upstairs to her room.   She changed her clothes quickly into her pajamas and turned her light off. Once Penny got near her desk she remembered she forgot to call her grandfather. She had a phone in her room so she decided to call him from there.  Penny lifted the reciver and held it to her ear she was about to dial his number when she heard her father on the line, and he was talking with some other man.   Penny decided to listen to the convertion.
     "After ten years you finally decide to call me?" asked the voice angrily.
     "I know, Gadget you might be upset...."
     "Upset? Ha I'm just peachy!" The man yelled, it scared Penny a bit.   "I mean after all I haven't waited ten years for my brother to call and see how his life is!"
     "Gadget...I've been meaning to call it's just....it's just..."
     "It's just you're wife doesn't like me. I understand." He seemed to clam down a bit.
     "Gadget I have a question to ask you." Penny's father said.
     "Shoot it." Gadget replied.
     "I want you to come over to my house....tomorrow if you will."  
     There was silence for a mintue on the phone, Penny thought Gadget might have hung up but then she heard his reply, and her heart sank.
     "I can't."
     "Huh?"
     "I can't"
     "Why not?"
     "Chief Quimby won't give me a vacation." Was his reply.
     "Chief Quimby? Who is he?"
     "He's my boss.  I'm an Inspector." He answered.
     "I'm sure he'll give you time off for this."
     "What am I going to tell him? Hmm? Ask him if I can take off for a little bit to see my brother who hasn't talked to for ten years, and go to a sister-in-law who hates the hell out of me?  He's answer is going to be a no." Gadget answered.
     "But Penny wants to see you!" Penny's father yelled.
     "Penny? I thought your wife's name was Mary? Don't tell me you're cheating on your wife. That's the last thing I want to hear from you."  Gadget said.
     "Penny is my daughter." He answered laughing.
     "You have a daugther? Damn just when I thought you'd never have childern." Gadget snickered.
    "You're very funny. And when are you going to get yourself a girlfriend?" Penny's father retroted.
     Gadget ignored the question and asked, "How old is she?"
     "Same age as for as long as I haven't been talking to you." He answered.
     "Ten. Wow. What does she look like?" Penny's uncle asked in wonder.
     "She looks more like her mother, but she has your eye color, but it changes to blue some times."
     "Maybe if I trim the ice, my boss might let me come."  Gadget said thoughtfully.
     "Great!"
     "I said might! I don't know if he will let me."  Gadget said quickly.
     "You act as if your boss doesn't like you."
     "Let's just say he thinks I "goof off" too much."  Gadget said.
     "What you don't do your work?"
     "No, I get the job done, just too clumsy."  Gadget answered. "Hey, Jospeh?"
     "Yes?"
     "Do you think it's alright.....alright if I talk to Penny?" Her father didn't answer at once.
      "If you don't want me to I can understand." Gadget sighed.
      "Just let me go see if she's awake." Her father said quickly. As soon as Penny heard that, she hung the phone up and turned her light on quickly. She grabbed a random book from one of her book shelves and opened it onto a random page.   At that moment her father came into the room.
     "Penny you're awake?" Her father asked.
      "Yes sir I couldn't sleep." Penny answered as she pretended to read the book in front of her.
      "There's someone on the phone that really wants to talk to you." Her father smiled.
      Penny smiled, even though she already knew it was her uncle, who she had never spoken to ever. Penny went to her phone once more and answered it. "Hello."
       Penny heard her uncle murmur to himself,  "Wowzers....So he wasn't kidding....Hi there."
      "Is this you Uncle Gadget?" Penny asked.
       "Yep, so how much have you heard about me?" He asked.
      "I just found out today by my grandfather." Penny asked.
     "Oh....." He sounded hurt. "Brain get down!!!!"
     "Brain? Who's Brain?" Penny asked.
     "He's my dog, and doesn't listen to half the things I say." Gadget answered.
     "You have a dog? That's cute." Penny laughed.
      "Yeah, if I get to come tomorrow, I'll bring him with me. Yes you! I'm taking you with me!" Gadget laughed.
     "You're coming tomorrow?" Penny asked even though she had already heard it.
     "I pretty sure you knew that." Gadget chuckled.  Penny blushed, her uncle knew she was easedropping. "From the silence I'm expecting that's a yes."
     "Yes sir." Penny answered.
     "No need to call me sir. Just call me Gadget." He laughed.
     "Sure, Uncle Gadget." Penny laughed.
     "Hey Penny can I ask you to do me this big favor?" Gadget asked.
     "Sure. What is it?" Penny asked.
     "Could you not tell your mom I'm coming tomorrow?" Gadget asked urgently.
     "Sure I won't tell her." Penny answered.
     "Thanks, well I have to go...I'll see you tomorrow." Gadget said.
     "Okay. Good night Uncle."
     "Goodnight."
     "I love you." There was a slience as if Gadget never expected to hear Penny to say that.
     "I love you too." He whispered, and hung the phone up.
      Penny hung her phone up and felt happy in a way. She got to talk to her uncle that see never seen or even meet before. It made her feel happy.
     "Well Penny what did you think of your Uncle Gadget?" Her father asked.
     "He sounds sweet." Penny answered.
     "He is." Her father repiled.
     "How come Uncle Gadget isn't married?" Penny asked.
     "How did you know he wasn't married?"
     "The way he didn't respond very comfortably to me saying I love'd him." Penny answereed, which was only part way true.
      "Let's just say he has a few glitches." Her father repiled.  
      "You act as if Uncle Gadget is...well a gadget!" Penny said.
     "When you grow up you'll figure it out." Her father smiled. "Now go to bed."
     "Yes Sir."

     Penny sat on the couch in the living room waiting for the door bell to ring, or at least a knock on the door.  Her mother came downstairs right when then was a knock on the door. It sounded like the person was hesitating when they knocked. Penny was going to answer the door but her mother got to it first and opened it.  
     "What are you doing here?!" Penny's mother growled.
     "It's nice to see you too Mary." A man's voice laughed.
     "JOSPEH!" She yelled, and stomped off up stairs.
      "I knew me coming would cause trouble." A man said, as he entered the house. And for the first time Penny laid eyes on her Uncle Gadget.
      He was dressed in a tanish jacket with a pair of blue jeans. He had black hair that flipped on both sides and he wore a tanish hat that matched his jacket. He looked a bit tense and alert and yet he also look peaceful.
     "Are you Penny?" He asked, as his eyes landed on Penny.
     "Yes sir." Penny smiled, and came up to her uncle. "I didn't think you were going to show up."
     "I almost didn't to tell you the truth." Gadget answered.
     "I'm glad you did anyway." Penny smiled, and hugged her uncle. Penny could tell Gadget was surpirsed to find her so loving towards a stranger she had just meet, but she knew that he was family and she didn't care if her mother didn't like him.
      "I'm glad I came as well." Gadget smiled, and knelt down so he was eye level with Penny. "Just looking at you, makes me feel old, and left out of life." Gadget said with a sigh.
     "Well then I will bring right back into life." Penny smiled.
      "Clever girl." Gadget smiled.
     "How long do you plan to stay?" Penny asked.
     "Yes Gadget....How long do you plan to stay?" A voice growled from atop the stairs. Penny looked up to see her mother looked furious.
    "For as long as you won't me to stay ma'am." Gadget answered poiletly, and stood back up.
     "I don't want you to stay at all to tell you the truth Gadget." Penny's mother spat.
     "I know you don't." Gadget answered.
     "Then why did you bother coming here?!" She yelled.
     "I wanted to see my neice." Gadget answered.
     This was the first time Penny ever saw her mother so furious at someone. She could she from her mother's face that she hated her uncle, she could tell she loathed the fact that Gadget was there, she could tell her mother looked ready to hurt Gadget in anyway she would be able to find.
     "Gadget who ever told you I had a daughter? Was it Joesph? Or was it Phil." She asked.
     "I found it out on my own. I mean in ten years anything can happen." Gadget answered.
     "Jopesh! Come on we leaving!" Penny's mother yelled, and wlaked down the stairs.
     "Leaving? Where are you going?" Penny asked.
     "You're  father and I are going to the movies, we were going to take you to your grandparents but seems as he's here." Penny's mother said, eyeing Gadget with hateful eyes. "He'd might as well watch you."
     "Really?" Penny asked happily.
     "Never thought you'd ever ask me to do that." Gadget smiled.
     "Never was. Joesph insisted that you could since you're here." She answered.
     "Why don't you like me?" Gadget asked.
     "You should already know that reason." She answered.
     Penny's father came down the stairs at that moment and Gadget said nothing more to Penny's mother.
      "Can I thurst you to keep an eye on Penny?" Her father asked.
     "Inspector Gadget ready for duty."  Gadget smiled.
     "Somethings never change about you." Penny's father laughed.
     "Let's go." Penny's mother said, dragging him out the door. Penny and Gadget stood at the door way and waved goodbye to her parents, but to much greif and terror as soon as the car engine turned on, there was an explosion that could be heard from miles round. Gadget sheilded Penny parts glass or any other harmful things that has caused in the explosion, by holding her close to him and had her against the door, as of while Penny didn's relize what had taken place.
      "Are you alright?" Gadget asked her.
      "Y-yes." Penny answered, but when Penny turned and saw the exploded car, tears started to dribble down her face as she soon relized her parents were dead.   "Th-their gone...." Penny cried, and held tighly to her uncle. "Their gone!" she sobbed. Gadget stayed quite in his own thoughts and just craddled Penny in his arms.
  **********five years later************
      Penny had just heard the news that her Uncle had gotten into the bad wreck last night, compaired to her parents and was in the emegrecy room.   Penny ran from her house and began running down to the hopsitpal that was miles away from the house.   
     Panting at each breath that she drew she kept remembering her parnets being blown up in the car, and now the only closest person to her was now or either going to die from the same cause.
      "Why does this keep happening to me?" Penny asked as she contuined running down the street until she finally at last reached the hosptial. Exhasted and weary she pushed her self to go to the front desk of the emergency room.
      "Excuse me I'm looking for a Mr. Gadget." Penny told the woman at the desk.
     "His first name please." She told Penny.
      "I don't know it. It told me just to call him Uncle Gadget." Penny answered.
      "Is he your acutal Uncle?" The woman asked carelessly, and seemed to barely care if Penny wanted to see her Uncle.
     "Yes. What room is he in?" Penny asked.
     "Room 42A." The woman answered. "But you can't see him."
     "Why not?" Penny asked.
     "Because visiting hours are up." She answered.
     "Oh....alright...." Penny said turning away from the desk and seemed to be heading towards the exit but instead she turned and ran through the hallway.
     "HEY!" The woman yelled. "Secruity!"
     Penny ran though the hallways reading each sign as she passed it. "Room 41A, 41B, 41C, 41D....42A yes!" Penny went to the room and could hear yelling inside.
     "What have you done to me?!" She heard her Uncle yell.   
     "We decided to test you out for an experment. Make you stronger....better......more powerful." She heard a doctor say inside.
      "Stonger huh? So if I was to twisit my wrist I could snap your neck?" Her uncle growled.
      Penny decicded then that she had to go in and save the doctor from whatever he did to her uncle. Penny entered into the room, and saw that he uncle was standing several feet away form the doctor but his hand! His arm had wires and twisted machinery running along it with the hand grasped on the doctors throat.
      "I want to be changed back!" Her uncle growled.
      "I'm sorry but we can't." The doctor answered scaredly.
      "How could you just change me into this?!" Gadget growled and ripped the shirt he was wearing to reveal more robotic parts with wires twisting everywhere on his body, and objects that seemed to be hiden inside of him.
      "Just say "go go gadget" whatever and that object will come out." The doctor said.
      "Oh like Go go gadget knife?!" Right as he said those words his left hand changed out and was replaced with a knife.
      "Yes! Yes!" The doctor cried.
      "Uncle!" Penny yelled, as she saw that Gadget was about to slash the doctor up. At the sound of her voice he seemed to be brought out of his trace of anger.
      "Penny?" He asked, and turned around to face her. What she saw, would always remain her mind for the rest of her life. His face was the same, but his body was reconstruted into a different thing. A gadget Penny called it.
      "Come on Uncle Gadget we should go." Penny said, taking her uncles hand.
     "I can't go out like this." Gadget told her.
     Penny soon remembered the bag that she had on her back."Here Uncle Gadget, I think I have your jacket." Penny said as she removed it and handed the jacket to him.
      Suddenly a hand came out from his head and took the jacket from her.   Penny gasped in surprise that her uncle knew how to use the gadgets, but when she looked at him, she could tell that he didn't even know how he was doing it.
      "Too strange a thing." Gadget said as he slipped the jacket on and the hand disappered back into his skull.
      "Let's go home." Penny said, squeezing her uncle's hand.
     "I'm surprise you want to be next to a freak like me now." Gadget told her.
     "It doesn't matter what happens to you Uncle. I will always love you."
